Bass Rocco Cavalluzzi has established himself as one of the most versatile interpreters of his generation, distinguished by the depth of his voice, interpretive sensitivity, and mastery of a repertoire that spans from Baroque to contemporary works.
Trained at the Conservatory of Campobasso, where he graduated with top honors, Cavalluzzi refined his vocal technique under the guidance of renowned teachers such as Marina Gentile, Sherman Lowe, and currently with the celebrated bass Luca Tittoto. His training was further enriched through participation in prestigious academies, including the Rodolfo Celletti Belcanto Academy in Martina Franca, where he won the prize for “Best Talent,” and the Academy of Teatro alla Scala in Milan, where he was awarded the scholarship dedicated to the great bass Paolo Montarsolo.
His professional debut came in the role of Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor) at the theaters of Treviso and Ferrara, under the baton of Sergio Alapont and the direction of Francesco Bellotto, after winning the Toti Dal Monte competition. Since then, Cavalluzzi has graced the stages of some of the world’s most important theaters, including Teatro alla Scala in Milan, where he has performed roles such as Alidoro (La Cenerentola), Bartolo (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Dulcamara (L’Elisir d’amore), the Flemish Deputy (Don Carlo), and Ourskan (Ali Babà e i 40 ladroni).
In recent years, Cavalluzzi has solidified his international presence with significant debuts. In 2023, he performed Lord Sidney (Il viaggio a Reims) at the Staatstheater Augsburg and Gubetta (Lucrezia Borgia) at the Aalto Theater Essen, marking his entry into the German opera scene. That same year, he took on the title role in Idalma by B. Pasquini at the Musikfestspiele Potsdam, under the direction of Alessandro De Marchi, and brought a darkly nuanced Don Giovanni to the Teatro Sociale di Rovigo, conducted by Massimo Raccanelli and directed by Alfredo Corno.
At the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, he portrayed Achilla in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto, conducted by Rinaldo Alessandrini and directed by Damiano Michieletto, in a co-production with the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. This production, alongside his portrayal of Mangiafuoco (Pinocchio) at the Teatro Regio di Torino and the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, underscores his ability to move effortlessly between genres and eras.
In 2024, Cavalluzzi continues to bridge the classical and the modern: at the Festival della Valle d’Itria, he performs the title role in Aladino by Nino Rota, conducted by Francesco Lanzilotta and directed by Rita Cosentino, while at the Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania, he takes part in the world premiere of La Lupa – Il berretto a Sonagli by Marco Tutino, an opera inspired by Pirandello, conducted by Fabrizio Maria Carminati and directed by the visionary Davide Livermore.
Cavalluzzi boasts significant concert experience, including performances at the Wigmore Hall in London in the recital Anna Bonitatibus & Friends, where he presented rare Italian chamber arias, and in symphonic works such as Rossini’s Stabat Mater with the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto and Mozart’s Requiem with the Orchestra della Magna Grecia. With the Orchestra Sinfonica della Città Metropolitana di Bari, he performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under the baton of Eric Lederhandler, joining a 200-voice choir in a tribute to universal brotherhood.
His discography includes recordings of Baroque and rare works, such as Idalma by B. Pasquini and La Dori by Cesti (DVD Naxos / CD cpo), Lucrezia Borgia by Donizetti (CD Dynamic), and La Donna Serpenteby Casella (CD Dynamic), showcasing his commitment to rediscovering lesser-known masterpieces.
With a rich and enveloping timbre, magnetic stage presence, and impeccable technique, Rocco Cavalluzzi continues to captivate audiences and critics alike, affirming his place as one of the most compelling basses on the international opera scene.
